flash intro

Now, I am back at school. I believe that if I work hard, I can finally be something and change my life forever. I am very grateful for your help. I think I am the luckiest girl among the 1.3 billion Chinese.

Our students are all girls from rural areas in the Yunnan and Guangdong provinces of China.* While each girl has her own unique story, they all share important similarities.

Most are daughters of hard-working farmers. All of our students understand that education can change their lives and they have succeeded despite challenging circumstances. Many live in one room mud brick homes with no running water or electricity, but they all studied chemistry, physics, math, politics, Chinese and even English. They all received top scores on the high school entrance exams and have been accepted into the best high schools in their counties, but with family incomes averaging only $266 per year, the cost of high school tuition was completely out of reach.

When asked why she studied so hard for the exams when she knew that her family couldn't afford the tuition, one girl answered:

I understood the importance of education at a young age. I wanted to go to school. I loved studying and didn't want to give up my dreams of a bright future because of family difficulties. Though there was little chance that I could continue my education, I believe it is very important to at least have a dream. To me, opportunities are so important that I cannot let even a single chance pass me by. Education can change our lives and a bright future is waiting for me.

These girls are role models for our children and heroes to their families. They are motivated, intelligent and with an education, they can make a difference for not only their families but also for their communities.

I will treat difficulties as challenges now. I will give other people a hand when they need help the most and let the world be full of love.
